Vacca, County Court, Monroe County Description: Since the start of the pandemic, New York State Judges have adapted their processes to allow for virtual court appearances. This presents many benefits for lawyers but does it adequately address the challenges faced by litigants on the wrong side of the digital divide? What have we learned from the past two years? In this moderated discussion, judges will share their experiences on the bench, offer insights for making virtual proceedings more effective, and consider the future of remote court appearances. |

That data can be used to inform internal decision-making. Using reporting features available through LegalServer and other case management systems, presenters will demonstrate how data can be used for: supervision, measuring progress on grants, tracking organization-wide metrics etc. Presenters will share their visions for using data to drive the work. |

2C Virtual Pro Bono Clinics: How Simpson Thacher and VOLS Collaborate on a Dedicated Pro Bono Platform | Transcript Moderator: Peter Kempner, Legal Director, Volunteers of Legal Services Speakers: Peter Kempner, Legal Director, Volunteers of Legal Services; Harlene Katzman, Pro Bono Counsel & Director, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP; Elizabeth Lambdin, Practice Innovation Manager, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP Description: When the COVID-19 pandemic made in-person pro bono clinics impossible, law firm pro bono departments searched for alternatives to the traditional in-person clinic format. One of the innovations has been the creation of virtual clinical platforms. These platforms allow clients, pro bono attorneys, and legal services providers to collaborate in real-time. Mobile apps allow clients to upload documents to the platform for their cases, pro bono attorneys send documents to their legal services partners for review, and legal services providers are able to monitor case progress and provide support to clients and volunteers. Attorneys from Simpson Thatcher and Volunteers of Legal Service will demonstrate Simpson’s platform and discuss how they have used the platform for DACA application and renewal clinics. |

Presenters will discuss what went right, what went wrong, and the key takeaways. While focused on ODR, the lessons shared in this session apply to other court technology projects. |

A well-built API project can change an onerous information-gathering task into a trivial one. It has become vital for legal service providers to understand how APIs may be implemented to help improve the delivery of legal services. This panel will demonstrate how APIs have been deployed to enable: case management systems to gather information on property registration and building violations, document assembly programs to access electronic dockets to build court forms, and providers to securely share information about their clients. |
