The 8th Judicial District containing Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties is one of thirteen judicial districts across New York State. Our judges and court staff work each day to fulfill the mission of the Unified Court System (UCS) to deliver equal justice under the law and to achieve the just, fair and timely resolution of all matters that come before our courts. We are pleased to offer externship opportunities for current second-year and third-year University at Buffalo Law Students.
Externship Objective
- To offer a thorough externship initiative for law students to acquire practical legal experience within the operations of the New York State Court System, focusing on legal research and writing in the areas of civil, criminal and family law. In addition, this externship will prepare future legal practitioners with an invaluable experience that will assist them in developing core legal competencies.
Qualifications
- Current second-year or third-year law and joint degree students may apply to participate in the program. Space is limited and interviews will be conducted.
- Candidates should have basic legal research and writing skills as well as strong communications skills.
- Acceptance into the program is at the discretion of the 8th Judicial District Administrative Judge.

- In the cover letter, students should articulate their interest in this externship.

Commitment
- Must be registered for UB Law Class 791TUT.
- Students will fulfill the University at Buffalo Law School externship requirement hours.
- The specific days and times are coordinated with the intern's supervisor.
