Jury Service

The NYS Unified Court System & Acting Commissioner Rothermel would like to assure you that your health and safety remain a top priority for us as we resume essential court operations, including jury service.

What to Expect When You Appear:

Regular deep cleaning of offices and court facilities with enhanced cleaning of commonly used areas.

Limited number of people in the courthouse.

Court Users, including Jurors who have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and can provide proof of vaccination (a vaccination card, a picture of a vaccination card on a mobile device, or a NY State Excelsior Vaccination Pass) and a valid I.D. may request a court-issued Visitor or Attorney/Agency pass permitting them to enter a courthouse on that day. Please bring your own mask/face covering.

Plexiglass barriers may be present at various locations, i.e. magnetometers, x-ray machines, and assembly room desks.

To meet social distancing standards, indicators like blue or yellow tape may be present in public and common areas to ensure physical distancing of at least 6 feet.

Hand sanitizer is available for all court personnel and visitors.

Please note the following:

Commissioner of Jurors will continue to provide jurors with public WiFi.

Bring your own pen/pencil and take it with you when you leave.

Bring your own books/magazines/electronic devices and chargers.

Jurors may bring their own beverage in a resealable, non-glass container and snack or food that does not require refrigeration.

As of January 1,1996, there are no exemptions from jury service

Pursuant to NYS Judiciary Law Article 16, section 500:

“It is the policy of this state that all litigants in the courts of this state entitled to trial by jury shall have the right to grand and petit juries selected at random from a fair cross-section of the community in the county or other governmental subdivision wherein the court convenes; and that all eligible citizens shall have the opportunity to serve on grand and petit juries in the courts of this state, and shall have an obligation to serve when summoned for that purpose, unless excused.”

 

You are not qualified to serve as a juror if:

You are not a citizen of the United States

If you are not a United States citizen, your name will be removed from the rolls as soon as you provide the jury office with one of the following proofs:
  • A photocopy of your Alien Registration Card
  • A photocopy of your Work Authorization Card
  • A photocopy of your Visa
  • A photocopy of your home country Passport

You are not a resident of Bronx County

If you are not a resident of Bronx county, your name will be removed from the rolls as soon as you provide the jury office with two proofs from the following list:

  • A photocopy of your latest utility bill showing your name and current address (only one utility bill may be used as proof).
  • A photocopy of your current lease, deed, or mortgage.
  • A photocopy of your voter registration card.
  • A photocopy of your tax return with amounts deleted.
  • A photocopy of your Division of Motor Vehicles Identification Card (DMV ID).

Both of your proofs must have your new address listed on them.

You have served as a juror in a New York State or Federal Court within the past 6 years

If you have been convicted of a felony

If you have been convicted of a felony, please submit your completed questionnaire, or juror summons, along with proof of your felony conviction by email to bronxjury@nycourts.gov

If you do not have proof of your felony conviction and you were convicted in New York State, please email us at bronxjury@nycourts.gov to advise that you do not have proof of your conviction.

If you do not have proof of your felony conviction that occurred outside of New York State, you must contact that jurisdiction for proof.

If you have a Certificate of Good Conduct or Relief from Civil Disabilities, you are eligible to serve and should submit documentation by email to bronxjury@nycourts.gov - please include your 9 digit Juror Index Number as the subject of your email or by mail to:

Postponements & Excusals

All applications for postponements must be submitted prior to the date of jury service. If the summons indicates that you have had a prior postponement, or that you were absent the last time you were summoned, it is important that you report for jury service on the date the summons indicates.

If you have had no prior postponements, and would like to automatically file for your first entitled postponement now, you can apply by phone at 1-800-449-2819 or on the web at www.nyjuror.gov.

To apply for a postponement or excusal if:

You have a medical condition or disability

If you have a medical condition that prevents you from serving as a juror, please submit a statement from a licensed medical professional which includes the following:

A diagnosis of your mental or physical condition.
A prognosis of how long the condition is expected to exist.
A conclusion stating that you are incapable of serving as a juror currently or in the future.

You are the caregiver of a child or an elderly person

If you are the main caregiver of your child or children under 14 years of age or an individual who requires constant attention, you may request a postponement by returning your completed questionnaire or summons, along with a copy of the birth certificate of your youngest child, or a doctor's note stating the condition of the person being cared for and that you are the main caregiver of that person.

You do not speak English


If you are a citizen seeking to be excused on the basis that you are unable to understand and communicate in English, you must report as directed on your summons or subpoena. Further instructions will be given when you appear.

 


The juror is deceased

If the proposed juror is deceased, please provide a copy of the decedent’s death certificate, obituary, or other official certification by email to: bronxjury@nycourts.gov or by mail, along with the summons or questionnaire to:

Information on Payment for Jury Service

Jurors who are employed and paid their salary during their entire jury service, will not be paid a jury fee by New York State.

All companies with more than 10 employees must pay a stipend of at least $40 to the juror for each of the first three days of jury service.

Jurors employed by companies with more than 10 employees who are not paid for jury service after the third day, will be paid by New York State $40 per day for each day they are not paid by the employer.

Jurors employed by companies with 10 employees or less and are not paid for jury service, will be paid $40 a day every day for each day of service.

Jurors are not paid by New York State for their daily transportation costs.

All checks, if any, for jury service, will be mailed to you by the office of the New York State Treasurer within six weeks after completion of your service.
