A Public Access Law Library of the NYS Unified Court System, 5th Judicial District, the Lewis County Supreme Court Law Library is a member of the Association of Law Libraries of Upstate NY (ALLUNY), the Northern NY Library Network (NNLYN), and the NYS Unified Court Law Libraries Association (ProSe).
Location & Directions
The Library is located at the Lewis County Courthouse, 7660 North State Street, in Lowville, New York on the second floor of the new courthouse facility. From the New York State Thruway, Exit 31 (Utica), proceed North on Route 12 to Lowville.
Collections & Services
The Lewis County Supreme Court Law Library offers a variety of legal research information resources. A brief listing appears below. Our collection is available online in the LION Catalog. Library materials are available in a variety of formats – print, online, and microform.
The Library has recently been updated and renovated, allowing for a more extensive conference and research area, including the addition of a public access computer. The public is welcome to use the 'Public Access Lexis' databases. Legal reference materials are also available for public use but must be used on premises. Books are not allowed to be removed from the Library. Document delivery is available;
Reference
Law Library staff are pleased to provide directional, bibliographic, and reference assistance to judges, attorneys, and the public. The Library provides public access to Lexis, Loislaw and Westlaw for online legal research and is WiFi accessible. There are two public access workstations located in the main library for accessing online legal resources. The library staff provide basic instruction in using these materials, and user guides are available.
Although staff are unable to provide legal advice or counsel, we are happy to assist you in using the Law Library to research the areas and topics necessary to answer your questions, and to refer you to other organizations when appropriate.
Circulation
Court personnel and local attorneys may borrow materials subject to the Circulation Rules of this Library. All other library visitors must use materials within the Law Library.
Interlibrary Loan
Material not available at this Library can be obtained through our Interlibrary Loan service. Most Interlibrary Loans can be obtained at no cost but when the supplying Library requires a fee, borrowers will be notified and have the option of refusing the offer. Materials are generally available within a week to ten days, often sooner.
