Bronx County Court Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

On October 4, 2018, the Supreme Court, Civil Term, Bronx County in collaboration with the Bronx chapter of the Cervantes Society celebrated Hispanic Heritage month. The Master of Ceremonies was the Honorable Rolando T. Acosta, Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department. Deputy Chief Administrative Judge/Acting Interim Administrative Judge of Bronx Civil Supreme Court, Honorable George J. Silver and Administrative Judge of Bronx Criminal Supreme Court, Honorable Robert E. Torres also greeted the large audience. The Keynote speaker was poet, writer, and Professor Dr. Myrna Nieves. There was a dance performance by the Bronx Family Court Salseros which included Hon. Ruben Martino, supervising judge of Bronx Family Court. Both Judge Acosta and Dr. Nieves received proclamations from the Bronx Borough President’s Office.

Hispanic Heritage Month Committee of the Nassau County Courts

On Friday, October 12, 2018, the Hispanic Heritage Month Committee of the Nassau County Courts celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a special event held at the Nassau County Supreme Court. More than 200 guests filled the court’s ceremonial courtroom for the annual celebration. The ceremony featured, as keynote speaker, the Hon. Hector D. LaSalle, Associate Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department. The Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to the Hon. Linda K. Mejias, Judge of the Nassau County Family Court and the first person of Latino descent elected to a countywide judgeship in Nassau County. The Hon. Helen Voutsinas, Judge of the Nassau County District Court and first Latina elected to the Nassau County District Court presided over the ceremony with Judge LaSalle and Judge Mejias.

Hon. Joseph Zayas, Administrative Judge, Queens County Criminal Term, concluded the program by delivering closing remarks. Musical selections were performed by the Freeport Middle School Mariachi Band. Authentic Latin American cuisine was served at the conclusion of the program. Co-sponsors of the event: The Long Island Hispanic Bar Association, the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association and the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association.
