Are you 55 years of age or over, in good standing, 10 years in practice, and interested in performing pro bono work?
The New York State Unified Court System has established a new “Attorney Emeritus” status for attorneys who meet these requirements. AEP attorneys volunteer with approved pro bono legal service programs to help serve the growing numbers of New Yorkers with legal needs who cannot afford counsel.
There are two ways to become an Attorney Emeritus. You can apply through either or both methods:
- Submit an AEP volunteer application. You can apply by calling 877-800-0396 or by completing AEP’s online application form. You may submit a volunteer application at any time, even if you have not yet changed your attorney registration status.
- Change your attorney registration status to Attorney Emeritus. You can do this on your attorney registration form, which you receive once every two years. For more information about the attorney registration form, visit http://nncourts.gov/attorneys/registration/index.shtml or call 212-428-2800.
Host programs will provide AEP volunteers with the training appropriate for the volunteer assignment.
