Acting Chief Judge Anthony Cannataro
Anthony Cannataro was designated Acting Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals and the State of New York, effective September 1, 2022. Judge Cannataro was confirmed to the New York Court of Appeals as an Associate Judge in June 2021. Prior to his appointment, Acting Chief Judge Cannataro was a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court in New York County and served as the Citywide Administrative Judge for the New York City Civil Court.
Judge Cannataro was elected to the Civil Court in 2011 and his first assignment upon taking the bench was to Family Court in Brooklyn, where he sat from 2012 to 2013. After serving in Bronx Civil Court 2014-2015, Judge Cannataro was appointed Supervising Judge of Civil Court in New York County in 2016. In 2017, Judge Cannataro was elected to the Supreme Court in New York County and, in 2018, was appointed Administrative Judge for the New York City Civil Court.
In addition to his duties at the Court of Appeals, Acting Chief Judge Cannataro has served as Co-Chair of the Richard C. Failla LGBTQ Commission of the New York State Courts, as a Commissioner on the Chief Judge’s Commission to Re-Imagine the Future of the New York Courts, and as a member of the Chief Judge’s ADR Advisory Committee. He is active in several bar associations.
Born to parents who emigrated from Italy, Acting Chief Judge Cannataro received his B.A. from Columbia University (1993) and his J.D. from New York Law School (1996). Before becoming a judge, Judge Cannataro served as a law clerk to the Hon. Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick, Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, and law clerk to the Hon. Lottie E. Wilkins in Supreme Court, New York County. Prior to working in the courts, Acting Chief Judge Cannataro was an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the Manhattan Trial Unit of the New York City Law Department.
Acting Chief Judge Cannataro resides in Westchester County with his husband.
