To make the Committee's opinions more accessible, we have posted a few educational and reference materials on selected topics (such as judicial speech and civic and charitable activities). We hope to address additional topics in the future.

Recurring Educational Programs

 

The following categories of judicial ethics education programs are typically offered every year and include faculty from the Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics. For information about other programs, please visit the Town and Village Courts website or contact the New York State Judicial Institute (914-824-5800).

  • Judicial Campaign Ethics Training.
    Target Audience: All candidates for elective judicial office.
    Timeframe: Ongoing via online video.
    Candidates seeking state-paid elective judicial office must complete this program no later than 30 days after receiving the nomination for judicial office. For those running in a primary election, the date of nomination is defined as "the date upon which the candidate files a designating petition with the Board of Elections." (Candidates seeking town or village justice positions are encouraged, but not required, to take the training.)

    Note: Candidates who wish to travel to the Judicial Institute in Westchester are welcome to attend the live program in the spring (April/May), if their schedule permits. Please call for details.
     
  • Ethics Update for Judges and Justices.
    Target Audience: All state-paid judges and justices.

  • Part I & Part II Ethics Training for Town and Village Justices.
    Target Audience: Town and Village Justices.
    Timeframe:
    Winter Parts I & II (Association of Towns Convention)
    Spring Part I (various local sites)
    Summer Parts I & II (Potsdam)
    Fall Parts I & II (NYS Magistrates Association Convention)
    Fall Part II (various local sites).

  • Taking the Bench: Ethics (Justice Court)
    Target Audience: For Newly Elected and Appointed Town and Village Justices.
    Timeframe: Following Spring and Fall Elections.

  • Winding Down Your Law Practice (New State-Paid Judges Only)
    Target Audience: For Newly Elected and Appointed State-Paid Judges only.
    Timeframe: Traditionally offered in November.
